Elsdon Pele With Autumn Fields Print 0013

I love the contrast in colours created by golden autumnal light washing across the Northumbrian landscape under a bruised and stormy sky. The warm light seems to make the sandstone buildings appear to glow with inner light, transforming the most mundane grey stone into a shimmering new form. This is Elsdon Pele, a fortified tower sometimes marked on ancient maps as a “castle” which is a remnant of Northumberland’s turbulent reiver history. Dating from around 1400, the tower was a fortified rectory, with walls 9 feet thick. Between 1762 and 1765 it was home to Lewis Carroll’s Great Grandfather The Reverend Charles Dodgson, who found it a cold and uncomfortable home. Some of his comments about the local inhabitants were so uncomplimentary that he might well have needed the fortifications to protect him from his congregation!
