Spring Flowers- The World Still Going On Outside Print 0016

The title of this print needs some explanation. The bunch of flowers was given to me by a friend who has a riverside garden, where she grows a combination of cultivated and wild flowers to encourage wildlife. When she handed the flowers to me their perfume gave me one of those instantaneous leaps back to childhood that one sometimes experiences. I suddenly remembered being ill in bed with measles and my Mum bringing me a posy of wildflowers which she placed so that I could see them where I laid. I recalled my childhood self looking at the bluebells and cowslips and thinking, “bluebells... the bluebells are out and I’m missing them! Everything’s still going on without me? I need to get better quickly or I’ll miss them.” It was the turning point in my illness and I was soon up and about again. I’ve never experienced such a vivid, elaborate and unexpected childhood recollection, so I was prompted to create a painting of it. It became one of a series of “family history” paintings I created for an exhibition at The Tom McGuiness Gallery in Bishop Auckland in County Durham. Because of its very personal “back story” it‘s the only painting I’ve found myself unable to part with- so it hangs in my sitting room.
