Every year, I try to arrange to go and see the puffins on Northumberland's Farne Islands. In 2025 I managed two visits, at different stages of the breeding cycle.
By July the pufflings have all hatched. Every parent pair now has the task of feeding their single hungry chick. They only have about 40 days to protect and nourish the offspring before it will have to live independently out in the North Atlantic. Each parent bird takes turns to go fishing and to protect the developing chick, protecting it from the predatory gulls. It's a time of intense activity for the birds, out at sea in all weathers fishing, then guarding their catch as they return to the burrow.
Puffins are exemplary parents.
