This small painting of the Northern Lights shows a sighting of the Aurora over Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall. This is the first painting I have created of this much loved landmark, since it was illegally felled in September 2023.
Like many people, I mourn the loss of this iconic sycamore, which was the region's most loved and photographed tree. It sat perfectly framed in a steep, dramatic dip in Hadrian’s Wall, between Steel Rigg and Housesteads Roman Fort, and was the highlight of every walk between those points.
I have only just felt ready to paint a good memory of this special place.
It was painted onto textured heavy weight paper, using Artist's professional acrylic paints and Artist's Medium, giving a shiny finish on the water.
It is ready to hang, and framed in a bespoke solid oak frame which is 26 cm square. The painted area is 12 cm square.
This series of small paintings are small enough to hang anywhere- an awkward space or on a staircase, but with enough presence to always look great- singly or as a group. Hang them in blocks, vertical rows or horizonal lines.
