This year in preparation for painting a series of puffin paintings, I made two trips out to Inner Farne to observe them. I did a lot analytical looking, as well as taking dozens of photos. Back in the studio, I also watched The National Trust's "Puffin Cam", to further study how puffins move and interact.
To understand how they move underwater, I watched all the video clips I could find of them fishing. In this small painting I have tried to suggest the weedy, green shallows round the Farne Islands.
This was painted onto textured heavy weight paper, using Artist's professional acrylic paint.
It is ready to hang, and framed in a bespoke solid oak frame which is 26 cm square. The painted area is 12 cm square.
This series of small paintings are small enough to hang anywhere- an awkward space or on a staircase, but with enough presence to always look great- singly or as a group. Hang them in blocks, vertical rows or horizonal lines.
