Every year, I try to arrange to go and see the puffins on Northumberland's Farne Islands. In 2025 I managed two visits, at different stages of the breeding cycle.
The puffins make their nests in burrows, nestled amongst the vegetation- sea campion, "Good King Henry" and the occasional thistle or dandelion. After the single egg has been laid by the female puffin, the parent birds take turns incubating the egg, and going out to sea to feed themselves. They do not need to bring their catch back to land.
At this stage they can take the occasional stroll round the outside of the burrow, to socialise . But they are constantly alert to the risk of predatory gulls. This puffin was surrounded by banks of sea campion, its own tiny garden full of white flowers bobbing in the breeze.
