Continuity- Watch and Daisy Chain  Print 0017

A reminder of the importance of family ties.

The original painting “Continuity- Watch and Daisy Chain” was one of a series of “family history” paintings I created for an exhibition at The Tom McGuiness Gallery in Bishop Auckland in County Durham. The watch was my late Grandfather’s and dates from the 1920s. Being such an old fashioned timepiece it was never ever used during my lifetime but sat in a cupboard as a reminder of a past generation. Somehow it was never valuable enough to make it worth selling, yet had too much sentimental value to give or throw away. The daisy chain represents the links between family members- how they pass knowledge, memories and habits to the next generation bridging time and place. They also remind me of the rare happy sunny afternoons when my older sister was feeling sufficiently magnanimous to make coronets of flowers for my hair.
