Rainbow clouds over Dunstanburgh Castle, from Longhoughton.
In December 2023, sightings of nacreous clouds across the UK made the headlines. These "rainbow" or "nacreous" (mother of pearl) clouds are a rare and beautiful phenomenon. They are formed in the lower stratosphere over polar regions, from minute ice particles. These particles reflect and scatter the sunlight from below the horizon and reflect it to the ground- usually before dawn and after dusk.
The North East of England enjoyed a very clear sighting of this magical sight, so I had to record it in a painting.
This painting was created using Artist's acrylic paints on a canvasboard.
The painted image is 30 by 40 cm. It is ready to hang and framed in a bespoke "double" frame, making the the outer dimensions of the framed work 45 by 55.5 cm.
