Super Blue Moon From Bamburgh Beach

Bamburgh Beach is one of my favourite places in Northumberland and I've painted it many times in all seasons, times of day and weather conditions. But on August 31st 2023, the night of a rare "Super Blue Moon", I was excited to be able to experience it in a totally new way.

My husband and I arrived on the beach while it was still light and the last of the holidaymakers were packing up their belongings and heading for their accommodation.  We set up a tripod on the sand, facing eastwards to the horizon, where the moon was due to rise, with Inner Farne and the Castle in the frame. Then we waited as it grew darker and the beach became an unfamiliar place, silent except for the lapping  waves.

Watching the Moon rise over the sea on a deserted beach was a spectacular experience. It began like an intense red bonfire on the horizon, then slowly rose, changing colour and slipping in and out of clouds, until it was hanging like a huge golden coin above the castle.

The light on the left on the horizon is the lighthouse on Inner Farne.

This painting was created using Artist's acrylic paints on a canvasboard.  It has been given two layers of matt UVA protective varnish, to help guard the surface against light and mechanical damage in years to come.

The painted image is 30 by 40 cm. It  is ready to hang and framed in a bespoke "double" frame, making the the outer dimensions of the framed work 45 by 55.5 cm.
