Cup and Ring Carvings- Lordenshaws Print 0049
The ancient “cup and ring” carvings on rocks in Northumberland and other places are mysterious and inexplicable. There are many theories as to why these looping, interconnecting swirls and circular holes may have been painstakingly ground into the upper surfaces of rocks. But their definite purpose or meaning remains elusive. In a world where we expect to be able to discover everything about anything, it’s strangely satisfying to realise that some things remain unknown and unknowable.
This particular large, carved rock is at Lordenshaws just outside Rothbury on the lower slopes of Simonside.
