Dunstanburgh Castle is one of Northumberland's most iconic sights and a favourite subject for artists and photographers alike. Set on a dramatic headland, the castle ruins rise above the sea like a broken crown. It was painted in various moods by JM Turner on his first visit to Northumberland in 1797 and on subsequent visits up until 1834.
In my own painting, seen in this print, I show a bright Spring day, from the north of the castle on Embleton Beach. This is probably my favourite beach and I visit it often all year round, when the beach is crusted with frost, when the wind whips up the sand into a painful maelstrom, or when the sea is filled with wet-suited surfers. But I love it best "off season" when it's empty and the wet sand reflects the castle on its shimmering surface.
