Scarlet is an unusual colour in our native landscape, which is perhaps why a sweep of poppies across a field always feels exhilarating. Up close they are delicate, with tissue thin petals and slender, wiry stems, yet together they take over the land, transforming neat cornfields into something bold and unforgettable.
This particular field was alive with the buzz of bees and the flutter of butterflies, and that sense of movement, life and warmth is woven into the painting. A joyful celebration of summer, colour and anarchic wildness that slips through even the most cultivated of landscapes.
