Steel Rigg is part of The Whin Sill, which runs across Northumberland from east to west. Here one can see how the Romans incorporated this natural feature into Hadrian’s Wall to increase the strength and impact of this Northern frontier of the Empire.
From the top of Steel Rigg's windswept cliff tops there is a spectacular view of undulating hills up towards Scotland and Hadrian’s Wall itself unfolding across the landscape. Crag Lough lake shines below in the distance.
