Vindolanda- and Hadrian's Wall

Vindolanda- and Hadrian's Wall

Regular price £65.00

Ever since childhood, Vindolanda has been my own personal favourite of all the Roman sites along Hadrian's Wall.

It lies just to the south of The Wall on the first Roman frontier in the north – The Stanegate Road.  From the viewpoint I have selected for this image, one can see how the original fort sat on a flat open area, above a small valley and stream.

Vindolanda was built by the Roman army before Hadrian’s Wall and became an important construction and garrison base for the Wall in its own right. During Roman occupation the Vindolanda site was demolished and completely re-built a surprising nine times. With each re-build, evidence was left behind of each community, in the form of alterations to the landscape and archaeology- which is still being painstakingly excavated each year. The organic finds of leather shoes, socks and most importantly, writing tablets, give us an intimate insight into the diverse people and their lives at the time.

Like all of my standard prints, this is printed with a white border, on a heavy duty matt archival quality paper, using pigment based professional colours, to produce a fine quality print that will give decades of pleasure.  Title and artist's signature on the lower edge of the border. Shipped rolled, without mount, ready to frame.

SIZE- Coloured area of print 29 cm x 34.5 cm
