Early in 2022, Northumberland was fortunate to experience a number of showings of the Aurora Borealis, where the clear, dry Northern sky was washed with colour and shifting light.
I loved the contrast between the unchanging solidity of Bamburgh Castle, against the rippling, shifting light and colour of the sky.
This painting was created on wooden ply gesso board, which gives a fine, smooth painting surface and a very durable support. (Paintings created on gesso board in the Medieaval period still hang in galleries all round the world.) It has been finished with two layers of UVA protecrtive matt varnish, to protect against light and mechanical damage.
