This painting is of the nesting burrow of a pair of puffins on Inner Farne, a small island off the coast of Northumberland.
For most of the year, puffins live a solitary life out in the North Atlantic. But when the mating season begins in Spring, they make their way back to their own particular nesting site to reunite with their life partner. Puffins are very faithful couples during nesting time, taking turns to incubate their single egg for about 40 days. Then once the egg is hatched, to fly out to sea to catch small fish or sand eels to feed their puffling baby. It's a busy time for puffin parents, who need to constantly feed and protect the chick from predatory gulls for a further 40 days or more, before they all head off independently back to the North Atlantic.
This painting was created using Artist's acrylic paints on a canvasboard.
The painted image is 30 by 40 cm. It is ready to hang and framed in a bespoke white painted wooden frame, making the the outer dimensions of the framed work 38 by 48 cm.
